President’s Message

Annual Auction & Raffle

by Mark Borserine

September has been quite a month! Volunteering at Mill Creek to build skyhooks for habitat restoration, followed immediately by a most successful picnic on Monday night, then the very next Friday, the Bohigian Conservation Area Dedication. In my spare time ...Well, I can tell you I got no “time at the vise”!

Without a breath, we go right into Auction. Don’t forget that we take used as well as new items and non-fishing items also. There are a good number of us who hunt as well and most all of us camp at some time or other; or, like John Gierach, at least make coffee by the stream. To paraphrase Scripture: “Go ye into the fields and byways and gather in what ye may”!  Call Jim Mattes with any last-minute donations including up to the “night of” auction. Which, by the way is October 15th – bring a friend along!  Also, don’t forget where the money goes to vs. just trying to get something cheap. If you’re thinking of buying something anyway, especially for gifts with the upcoming Thanksgiving & Christmas seasons, please consider that the money goes to your club and all the good it does. Throughout the year please sponsor our generous donors!

We branched out and began getting some non-fly fishing items this year and we have a couple of unusual ones:  Smoke N’ Fire donated a complete kitchen knife set manufactured in Australia by Furi. These knives are simply the latest thing!  And, absolutely razor sharp – a marvelous gift for anyone interested in the “Culinary Arts”. We have sturdy, quality US-made ladder-type deer stand!  Most deer stands now are made in China and the quality is notably lower. This stand sold originally for $149 and is brand new!  From Mickey’s Surplus.

This year again, Saltery Lake Lodge on Kodiak Island is offering a two-for-one deal. This is the trip Cliff Newton and I took in summer 2006 and I cannot recommend any place or any opportunity more highly. “Buddy Up” with someone and buy this trip – a genuine $2,300 value!!  There was no bid on this last year and someone really missed out on the trip of a lifetime!

Mill Creek Volunteer Day

by Mark Borserine

Kevin Carril’s idea to add some muscle to money and help the MDC with projects to improve the habitat on the stretch of Mill Creek that runs through the new Bohigian Conservation area in Phelps Cty MO paid off!  Nick Girondo said never in his wildest dreams did he believe that the 15 skyhooks or bank hides could have been built in as short a time as they were – he estimated MDC received the value of 200 man hours!

Representatives from four FFF-affiliates: HOAFF, Ozark Fly Fishers (St. Louis), Roubidoux Fly Fishers (Ft. Leonard Wood area) and Capitol City Fly Fishers (Jefferson City) as well as a strong contingent from Mid-Missouri TU gathered at the Bohigian Conservation area and completed the 15 skyhooks in record time. There were more volunteers than tools!

Fishing in Phelps County Missouri

by Mark Borserine

The two trips recently by HOAFF members to Phelps County MO; the first on Sept. 15th and the second on Sept. 21st while necessitated by higher aspirations, demanded that some water be fished nonetheless. On the afternoon of the 15th, Kevin Carril, Ron Carruthers, Jim Bebb and Mark Borserine were “forced” to spend a few hours on the Little Piney just East of Mill Creek. Peggy Bebb guarded the vehicles at Vida Bridge while she watched the wildlife and read a book.

Ron and Kevin went North, Ron catching two trout and Kevin catching one; Jim and Mark went South toward Layne Spring Access. Mark showed his prowess catching Chubb upon Chubb (they loved a Hopper/Copper John dropper combo) while Jim caught four trout on an Olive Woolly Bugger. Frankly, we all expected a little better fishing but the day was overcast and notably chilly considering the heat of the week before; perhaps the sudden change had set the fishing “off” a bit!

On Sunday morning, the same group drove down to Montauk and the Current River, putting in at Baptist Access on the Current. This time Kevin and I went upstream and Jim and Ron went downstream. Jim was the only one to be successful, catching a nice 16-incher!

The next Friday, John Bell and I went to the Bohigian Conservation area dedication and again, were “forced” into going over to the Little Piney for the afternoon. John and I “team” fished going South from Vida Bridge toward Layne Spring Access about 3/4 mile. John would fish the water first with a dry fly, his choice being an Elk Hair Caddis and I would fish it afterward, swinging an Olive Woolly Bugger downstream and across on a sink tip line (which would get under the woody debris surprisingly well). John caught three trout and I caught two, all small but beautifully marked and with a fighting spirit that belied their size.  I also caught what had to be a record Chub – fat and feisty, keeping up my tradition of the previous week, and a bluegill.

Bohigian Conservation Area Dedication

by Mark Borserine

On Friday September 21, 2007 the Bohigian Conservation area was dedicated at Mill Creek in Phelps County MO.  This is the 477 acres purchased by the Missouri Department of Conservation, assisted by donations from a number of Missouri Fly Fishers’ organizations and very substantial donation of part of the property’s value by Dr. and Mrs. George Bohigian.  The Bohigians were present at the dedication and I had the pleasure of meeting this charming couple and having my picture taken with them by the sign for the new Conservation area.  John Bell and I attended, representing HOAFF; you’ll see John pictured with two special friends, Curt Morgret of the Missouri Conservation Heritage Fund and Mike Kruse of the MDC.  The Missouri Conservation Heritage Fund pledged $100,000 toward the purchase and then went out to gather pledges from other organizations; it was MCHF who asked HOAFF for the donation.

Also attending were Elected Officials, County Commissioners, employees of the MDC and USFWS, and representatives of other organizations that had donated funds; some of whom I recognized from the previous Saturday when volunteers built the Bank Hides or Skyhooks for the MDC.

Kevin Carril, HOAFF auction chair got special mention at the dedication!  It was Kevin’s idea to gather volunteers to help build the Skyhooks on the previous Saturday (September 15th); Nick Girondo said that because of Kevin, the MDC received 200 man hours of labor from the various organizations.  The idea was so successful that the MDC is considering many more such events, especially for Crane Creek (Stone Cty MO).  Congratulations to Kevin on his achievement!

There were many wonderful comments and observations from all of the attendees  praising this achievement as an example of cooperation between government (MDC and USFWS), Phelps County, organizations such as the FFF clubs represented and Mid-Missouri TU and many private citizens.  The best comment came from Mrs. Chris Bohigian when she said her dream was to “find a ten-pound trout in this section of Mill Creek someday”.
