the Stream – November 2006 A
Publication of Heart of America Fly Fishers HOAFF November Meeting Monday, November 20, 2006 - 7pm Joe Tomelleri Kansas City Artist renown
for his fish illustrations and his discovery of native trout President's Message by Mark Borserine As I
reach the two –year point of my term as Club President, I find myself in the
dilemma of having run out of things to say and needing to say something
profound! Thoughts swirl around such
things as “why do we belong to a club ?”, “why do we fish ?”, “why do we fly
fish ?”. John D. Voelker,
retired Supreme Court Justice of Michigan and most famous as Robert Traver, author, said it all in the most famous paragraph in
Sporting Literature: Testament
of a Fisherman “I fish because I love to; because I love the environs where trout are
found, which are invariably beautiful, and hate the environs where crowds of
people are found, which are invariably ugly;
because of all the television commercials, cocktail parties, and
assorted social posturing I thus escape; because, in a world where most men seem to spend their lives
doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and
an act of small rebellion; because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be
bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and
humility and endless patience; because I suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and I
for one don’t want to waste the trip; because mercifully there are no
telephones on trout waters; because only in the woods can I find solitude
without loneliness; because bourbon out of an old tin cup always tastes better
out there; because maybe one day I’ll catch a mermaid; and, finally not because I regard fishing as
being so terribly important but because I suspect that so many of the other
concerns of men are equally unimportant
— and not nearly so much fun.” John D. Voelker (aka
Robert Traver) wrote many works: “Anatomy of a
Murder”, “Trout Madness”, “Trout Magic” and “Anatomy of a Fisherman” being his
most famous. Stan Miller’s widow
recently donated Stan’s books on Fly Fishing to the club, among those is a copy
of “Trout Magic” which will be in the library – if you never have, don’t fail
to read this book and others, if you have read his works, read them again –
John Voelker is considered to have produced among the
best Sporting Literature ever written! Spring Program - Mike Lawson Saturday, February

Richards It’s
time to start planning for the Annual Banquet and Winter Bennett Spring Trip.
The Winter Catch and Release season is always a great time to fish the waters
of Bennett Spring and the Annual Banquet is an event not to be missed. This
year the Annual Banquet is moving to a new location. We will have our dinner at
the Andy’s 417 Restaurant in the Best Western in Lebanon, MO. They are the same
great caterers, just a new location. Reserve
a place at Bennett Spring for lunch Saturday and at the Annual Banquet Saturday
night. Sign up at the next member meeting with John Richards or Jim Jorgensen. A
$15 advance reservation fee is required to hold a spot for these meals. The $15
will cover your meal cost (excluding drinks) at the banquet. The club will
furnish lunch at the shelter across the river from the spring at noon on
Saturday. There
are some fine places to stay while in the Bennett Spring region. It’s a good
idea to make lodging reservations. Bennett Spring Lodging Sand

Outing By Mark
Borserine Jim
Jorgensen and I are talking about an outing to the White River in the Spring;
unlike other previous outings we are moving this one to early to mid March to
hopefully coincide with the famous Shad Kill on the White and Norfork Tailwaters. Although arrangements are not yet made, the
plan would be to stay at White River Lodge on the famous area of the White
known as “The Narrows”, access to which is right in front of the Lodge. Clint Wilkinson has an “association” of about
six guides who cooperate with one another and could arrange guiding services
for all those interested to support the outing.
The Lodge features full kitchens on each of the three levels and smokers
and grills. I’ve become pretty good at
smoking and Jim is good with the grill, we can provide our own meals and
packaged lunches! The
entire Lodge can be rented for $400 a night and can accommodate 12 (or more
with cots, air mattresses, etc.); this is only $35 apiece! With the food, estimate the cost to be no
more than about $55 (on the high side) per day; this, of course, doesn’t
include any guide fees or boat rental – that’s an individual choice. Although the arrangements have not been made and the date is
still a good ways off, Jim and I would like some feedback as to whether there’s
enough interest to put this outing together.
Our numbers and e-mails are in the bulletin, let us know if you’re
interested! Successful Winter Catch and Release

Borserine This is the nymph that Charles Jardine
taught at the Conclave and I will be demonstrating at the November
meeting. It is very much like a scud or sowbug pattern. The thing that makes it “Czech” or “CZ” (a
play on the name of the famous Czech arms maker) is that it is very heavy and
very slim. Since Charles very graciously
told us we could plagiarize anything he gave us, I will: Why? This pattern is designed to be slim. Forget any notion that they should be
bulky! The slimmer they are, the quicker
they descend through the water column.
Broadly, they are suggestive of a wide number of river-dwelling creatures; but primarily they
are designed to represent the non-case making caddis species Rhyacophila and Hydropsyche. Beyond that, their shape and inherent “bugginess”, can suggest any number of trout snacks – shrimp
(scuds), hoglouse (Sow Bug) and so on. The simple fact is, the style of pattern
fishers where trout like to see their food and looks attractive enough to their
palettes to eat. Good enough for me! A quick note on materials; there is no doubt in my mind, a fusion
between natural animal furs and synthetics is the way to do. Natural fur (when non-waterproof) holds water
and becomes heavy: this is great! It
allows the pattern to sink far quicker.
The introduction of synthetics gives the pattern a lustrous quality that
shimmers and “kicks” with life – even when deeply sunk. The combination is a winning one. The Method. Some care is needed here; but more importantly
restraint in the amount of materials being used. A lightness of touch is needed with the
dubbing. Speaking of which; try a
variety of combinations of the body colors – even bright pinks and oranges for
colored water attraction – as well as, the more insect-oriented hues. Also, the choice of hook is fairly important. I liked the curved light wire grub designs –
don’t be afraid to try tying a few size 8 or 6 along with the more usual 10’s,
12’s and 14’s. Materials: Hook: See above Thread: 8/0-14/0 in white (you can use a waterproof
marker to then tint the head any color you wish. Orange, Flou.
Orange or pink, tan & black (OK! Anything that you want!). Over Rib: Wire or Nylon Monofilament of your choice Weight: Lead or Non-Toxic wire of the same diameter
as the hook wire Under Rib:
Mylar, Pearl or Gold Body: Dubbing, color of your choice; recommends a
mix of synthetic (shiny) and natural fur. Shell Back: Scud Back or
simple plastic cut from small bag. Tying Steps: 1. With
hook in the vise attach the thread. 2. Attach
the first/over rib (wire/monofilament) 3. Wind
fine to medium lead wire (diameter of the hook wire) along the entire shank,
leaving space at the rear and front of the hook for the head, etc. 4. Attach
the second rib of pearl or gold Mylar 5. Build
up a good tapering area of thread to the front and rear of the lead wire
turns. This will facilitate smooth
dubbing (this is also why you left space in step #3) 6. Make
a noodle from the dubbing – an interlocking spiral of material and literally
tie this in, as you would wool, chenille or floss. (see Poly Rosborough’s
noodle dub technique.) see footnote 7. Wind
this an open covering series of turns, so that the shank is covered with flat
turns as opposed to sectioned or rounded ones.
You can add a head of contrasting dubbing to the mix during the process. 8. Rib
in an even open spiral with the Pearl (or Gold) Mylar. 9. Attach
the shell back at the hook eye/thorax area (not at the
rear). Cut the sliver of nymph body,
Scud Back or any other PVC shell back material so that it covers the back and
just down the sides – an elongated coffin shape is the correct shape to aim for 10. Tension
the shell back firmly, then secure with tightly wound, even spirals of wire or
nylon monofilament and tie in at the head, whip finish – tint the head area if
required – varnish and you’re done! Footnote: This
subject is covered thoroughly in pp. 139-141 of “The Fly-Tiers Benchside Reference” by Ted Leeson
and Jim Shcollmeyer.
If you tie and you don’t have a copy of this reference, you are missing
an “essential”! Basically the dubbing
itself is wound and stretched into a self-supporting noodle and then that
noodle is wound around the hook just as if it were wool or yarn (vs. tight
dubbing loops that create a rounded or segmented look). Upcoming Events & Programs November 20, 2006 Joseph
