Across
the Stream – October 2006 A
Publication of Heart of America Fly Fishers HOAFF October Meeting Monday, October 16, 2006 - 7pm Annual
Auction & Raffle President's Message Fly
fishing is a never-ending palette of experiences and opportunities by Mark Borserine Our
Annual Auction is coming up Monday night the 16th of October. This is the main
fundraiser for our club. This is where we raise the money that we can donate to
Conservation and Education causes. Please come, bring a friend and be generous
in your bidding. I’m not encouraging you to buy things you don’t need, but
we’ll never tell your wife! If there is
something you’ve been thinking of, this is the way to buy it and help out the
club. Everyone who bought guided trips last year just really enjoyed them.
Cliff Newton and I bought the two-for-one offered by Saltery
Lake Lodge on Kodiak Island Alaska and had a wonderful trip. The same trip is
being offered again this year and I cannot recommend anything more highly! We have some great items in the auction which
Jim Mattes has listed in this newsletter and are posted on our website. Despite
the passing of J.P. Rozine, we will have professional
auctioneer, my cousin, Marty Read has generously volunteered his help. Again,
come! Bring a friend! Be generous in your bidding
remembering where the money is going! Our
guest speaker at our November meeting will be well-known Kansas City artist,
Joe Tomelleri who will be talking on how he
discovered an unknown strain of trout in Mexico. This should be fascinating! Keep
on your calendar our annual Winter Outing and Banquet the first weekend in
December. One change this year – we will be holding the Banquet at Nancy’s (of
Andy’s Catch) restaurant in Lebanon instead of at the Country Club. For some
reason, the dining room is closed at the Country Club. I am assured that the
restaurant has a liquor license! The
November newsletter will have directions to the restaurant. We will also post
directions on the website and give them out at the streamside cookout on
Saturday. Spring Program - Mike Lawson Renowned
fly fisherman, guide, fly tier, and founder of the Henry’s Fork Anglers fly
shop, Mike Lawson, is also the author of Fishing the
Henry’s Fork and a contributing editor of Fly Fisherman magazine. His new book, Spring Creeks is packed with
solid information for fishing spring creeks from Mike Lawson’s years of
fly-fishing experience. Important chapters cover mayflies, caddis, midges,
terrestrials, and aquatic insects. Plus, practical and proven advice on
locating, stalking, playing, and landing trout and tactics for fishing dry
flies, streamers, wet flies, and nymphs, from one of the best fly fishermen in
the business. In Memoriam JP Rozine The HOAFF
lost a good friend! On October 3rd, our auctioneer of many years, J.P.
Rozine passed away.
Those of us who worked closely with him and got to know him personally will
remember him as a genuinely nice man who was very generous. An avid
outdoorsman, he and his family gave of their time to a number of outdoors
organizations in the area by doing auctions and fundraisers and charging
nothing. As Jim Mattes said of him: “God Bless This Man!”.

of Christ Church 79th
& Mission Rd, Prairie Village, KS Annual Banquet/Bennett Spring Trip December 1-3, 2006 By John
Richards It’s
time to start planning for the Annual Banquet and Winter Bennett Spring Trip.
The Winter Catch and Release season is always a great time to fish the waters
of Bennett Spring and the Annual Banquet is an event not to be missed. This
year the Annual Banquet is moving to a new location. We will have our dinner at
the Andy’s 417 Restaurant in the Best Western in Lebanon, MO. They are the same
great caterers, just a new location. Reserve
a place at Bennett Spring for lunch Saturday and at the Annual Banquet Saturday
night. Sign up at the next member meeting with John Richards or Jim Jorgensen. A
$15 advance reservation fee is required to hold a spot for these meals. The $15
will cover your meal cost (excluding drinks) at the banquet. The club will
furnish lunch at the shelter across the river from the spring at noon on Saturday.
There
are some fine places to stay while in the Bennett Spring region. It’s a good
idea to make lodging reservations. Annual Auction &
Raffle By Jim
Mattes The
annual HOAFF auction and raffle will take place on Monday, October 16, 2006 at
7:00 p.m. Items will be available for viewing by 6:00, so come early. It will take place at our meeting location at
Community of Christ Church, 79th & Mission Rd, Prairie Village, KS. We’ve
already received a number of items. If
you like guided flyfishing trips, this is the years
to come to the auction. Though
the commercial items are great, everyone really enjoys the hand crafted flies
and equipment contributed by our members.
We also will need additional help from our members for such things as
set-up, ticket sales, and refreshments. If you can contribute please give me a
call or you can sign up at the October meeting. Many
members have already pledged donations.
Let me know if you have something in mind or just bring the item to the
October meeting. In
the weeks ahead we will plan to post auction items on our website. Be sure to check the website for updates www.hoaff.org. The
auction is a great opportunity to introduce others to our great club. Think about bringing a friend (or more than
one), and lots of money! Partial Auction Item List, check website for more updates www.hoaff.org A.K. Best flys hand-tied at our Spring Outing. Giraffe Fly tying Bench - donated by Jim Rogers at Bennett

Borserine You
really ought to “Give Iowa a Try”! The
HOAFF sent a small force known as the Iowa Expeditionary Force or IEF to the
far Northeast corner of the State to check out the streams for the rest of our
members. The members of the IEF were Ron
Carruthers, Bill Brant, Geoff Logan, Kevin Carrol,
Jim Bebb, Mark Borserine, Jim Thomason, and Norm
Crisp and a friend of his, Dwayne Brandt
who joined us from fishing in Southwest Minnesota. The “Driftless”
area is absolutely captivating consisting of gentle hills and valleys dotted
with Dairy farms and small towns, laced and criss-crossed
by numerous spring creeks. The creeks
are identical in appearance, water flow, topography, insect life, etc. to the
famous spring creeks of Pennsylvania such as the LeTort,
Yellow Breeches and Big Spring. During
the ice age the glaciers “missed” the Driftless area
which overlaps SW Minnesota, SE Wisconsin and NE Iowa; this area did not see
the scouring caused by the glaciers known as “Drift” which produced the numerous
pothole lakes of Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The
State of Iowa has done a lot of stream improvements, is very generous in
stocking (one stream has a wild brown population) and, for the most part,
access is very good. The towns in the
local area are hospitable, the food is good and hearty, the people are mostly
of German and Norwegian extraction. Each
town contains three Churches: German Lutheran, Norwegian Lutheran and Catholic;
picturesque scenes are everywhere! Look
at the Photo of Kevin Carroll (foreground) and Jim Thomason with the Victorian
home and Dairy Barn in the background. Just
after we arrived on Friday night, we had a violent thunderstorm with
lightening, hail and torrents of rain.
One of the streams we intended to fish was “blown out” by high
water. High, turbid water changed the
streams suddenly and dramatically and fishing was instantly “off”. Nonetheless, everyone managed to catch at
least one and some a fair number of fish.
The best fish of the IEF was a 14 ½” brown taken by Jim Bebb. While the best
patterns should have been hoppers, it seems the most successful technique was nymphing, the fish seemed to be pretty close to the bottom
staying well away from the increased flow of muddy water. Everyone assured us that the best time to
fish this area is in the Spring and we intend to put together another IEF in
the Spring! Fall Hoppers By John Berry It
was a very busy summer for my wife, Lori and me. I had been very busy guiding
and Lori had been involved with a complex consulting assignment. In addition,
it had been beastly hot. We had a period of 100 degree plus days that took the
fun out of being on the water. As a result, we had not done much fishing
together in some time. We decided to leave the house early and fish the Norfork. Now the idea of getting Lori up and on the road
before noon is radical. We live in different time zones. I wake up at 5:30 AM
everyday and am in bed at 10:00 PM while she stays up past midnight and sleeps
much later than I do if she is not working. The lure of catching trophy trout
finally won out. We left the house about 7:00 AM with only a brief stop at
McDonalds for a quick breakfast. We
got on the water before eight and walked far upstream. We were the only ones
there. Lori began fishing a size 22 Dan’s turkey quill emerger
(my brother, Dan’s most productive creation). She was almost immediately into a
good fish. Before I was fully rigged up she had landed the fat, eighteen inch
rainbow. I fished a nymph nearby but there were no takers. Lori landed a
fifteen inch rainbow and the fishing seemed to slow down. We decided to wade up
to our favorite spot. On
the way, I peeled off to fish a hole that had been particularly productive in
the past. From where I was fishing, I could clearly see Lori. I nymphed the spot relentlessly and was only able to raise a
five inch rainbow in the process. About this time, I looked up and noticed that
Lori’s Winston rod was bent over nearly double. She was carefully working her
way into quiet water in order to land the big fish. I quickly cranked up my
line and hustled over to where she was battling the trout. The rainbow was
fighting for his life. He made one powerful run after another. Lori was totally
absorbed by the process. She carefully applied the maximum pressure that the 5X
tippet would allow. He finally gave up the struggle and surrendered to my net.
It was a fat, beautiful twenty one inch rainbow. I quickly took several photos
of Lori and the Bow and then she lovingly released the trout. I
got in a run near to where she was fishing and finally managed to catch an
eighteen inch rainbow. I was glad to see it because Lori had caught two really
good fish and was now back in her run and was picking up one nice trout after
another. She finally cleaned out the run and we decided to fish our way out to
the access. I
walked down to a likely spot. As I approached, I saw a twenty inch cutthroat
calmly swim away from the bank and enter a current seam. I removed the strike
indicator, lead, nymph and 6X tippet. I then tied on a four foot section of 4X
tippet and a large Dave’s Hopper. I applied a small quantity of fly floatant and false cast to dry the fly. I figured the cutt would be spooked so I carefully scanned the run and
located a fat fifteen inch rainbow. I cast a couple of feet above him and
watched the hopper drift down toward his position. Suddenly the Cutt raced five feet across the current and nailed the fly.
I set the hook and the struggle was on. The fight ended much too soon. With the
4X tippet and large hook, I was able to put a lot of pressure on the trout and
had him in the net quickly. I continued fishing the hopper in the run and
really enjoyed myself. I caught one fish after another. They were hitting the
hopper like it was trout candy. I had gotten off to a slow start but I quickly
redeemed myself. Meanwhile,
Lori was fishing nearby. She had rerigged and had
returned to using Dan’s turkey quill emerger. She was
on a tear. She caught one good trout after another. The fishing was nonstop for
both of us. After a couple of hours there was a lull in the fishing. I looked
at my watch and noticed that it was after two o’clock. We had fished through
lunch and I was suddenly famished. We cranked up our lines and walked out. As
we drove home, we talked about how good a life we have. Being able to have
fishing like this so close to home! FFF SOC Embroidered Shirts Michael
