President's Message

Review of the first half of the year

by Mark Borserine

The schedule for Southern Council FFF Conclave is out and registration is open. My registration and check has already gone in; this is the way you get the classes and events you want – register early. Repeating myself, this year’s is the best yet!  Don’t miss out!

I’m glad to report the turnout for the One Fly was good and a good time was had by all who came (see article in this newsletter). Jim Jorgensen and Bill Lyon provided a good location and good food – I thank them for their efforts.

Upcoming we have the Olathe aquafest on August 27th. This event is attended by some 2,200 people and a wonderful chance to give the HOAFF some exposure to the community. The event is only four hours long so it will not demand much of your time; so, if you’ve not volunteered to help out before, please consider doing so this time. The demand on you will be very short and for one time only. Don’t be shy since everything we will be teaching & demonstrating will be of the most basic nature. If you can spare the time, call or e-mail Bill Brant  or Mark Borserine, their numbers are listed among the officers listed in the newsletter.

Speaking of Officers, you elect a Board of Directors (five) and they appoint Officers to oversee the operation of your club. Those Officers, who are honored by your confidence in them, meet the first Monday of each month at 7pm at the Community of Christ Church, the same place we hold our Member meetings on the third Monday. Those Officer meetings are always “open” meaning any member can come any time to the meetings. Also, we keep Minutes of the meetings which are open to viewing by the members upon request any time. Some of the Officers recently expressed the opinion that it would be a nice thing to publish in the newsletter a brief update on the actions taken during the Officer meetings; beginning with this issue, I’m happy to do so.

Olathe Aquafest

by Bill Brant

“Round up all of the usual suspects”. It was a line in an old movie, but is also applicable to our club. At the last club meeting, I asked for volunteers to represent our club at the Olathe Aquafest. With a few exceptions, all who signed-up were the usual suspects who always volunteer for club opportunities. I would like to ask that some unusual suspects also sign-up. If you have not been involved in club activities, please consider joining us. No particular skills are required. Read further for more information about the event.

Many communities across the metro area (actually all across the country) are sponsoring events that demonstrate the importance of clean water in our streams and lakes. The fish we pursue need clean water to survive. Therefore, we are one of the beneficiaries of these events. These events are usually both educational and fun.

Our club participated in one such event in May, the Overland Park Healthy Streams Fair. Cliff Cain, Bill Lindley, Hod McIntosh, Tom James and I demonstrated flytying, fly casting, and stormwater conservation.

The next event we will attend is the Olathe Aquafest. It will be held Saturday, August 27th from 3:00 to 7:00 at Cedar Lake Park in Olathe. Last year’s Aquafest had an estimated crowd of 2200 people. That’s a lot of folks interested in water. Last year they had everything from environmental education to canoe paddling. It was pretty hot last year, so the canoes were particularly popular.

We would like to demonstrate assorted flyfishing skills and also teach flyfishing using the teaching factory that Hod developed for the Hooked on Flyfishing programs. We can teach flytying, knots, flycasting, and explain flyfishing equipment. We need additional club volunteers to help.

These events give our club the opportunity to get our name and face in front of a large number of people. We will have the opportunity to introduce ourselves to perhaps thousands of people. We will teach a few of them about flyfishing. Let me know if you want to get involved.

Now you can get a T-shirt or a fishing hat with the new Heart of America Fly Fishers Logo. To purchase your HOAFF apparel, see Tom James at the next member meeting. Hats $15, T-shirts $12

One-Fly "Tournament" - June, 2005

by Mark Borserine

Members of the Heart of America Fly Fishers gathered on June 18th at Maple Leaf Lake for our Annual “One Fly Tournament”.  In recent years the “tournament” has come to be more of an outing with little or no attention paid to numbers of flies or fish.  However, this year we must honor a legitimate winner:  Cliff Newton actually used only one fly all morning to catch six “keeper” size bluegill (be assured they were all released); congratulations, Cliff!

First on the water was your club president, but he lost his first fly within a short time to Maple Leaf Lake’s flooded timber.  He caught one bluegill so small he didn’t know it was on until he backcast; although the bluegill cast quite well on a 5wt – a new streamer pattern!

Lunch was provided in the parking lot by our two Outings Co-Chairs: Bill Lyon and Jim Jorgensen.  Hats off to them, the brisket was delicious and all the “trimmings” were just right!

A special feast for the eyes was the parade of WaterCraft displayed by our members –check out these photos!

Officer Meeting Summary Report

By Mark Borserine

A report of the highlights for the first half of the year. The Officers go over a lot of routine “operational” items which will not be detailed in the interest of brevity:

Donations

Year-to-date donations have consisted of $1,500 of club funds to The Nature Conservancy Niangua Watershed project, $500 to The Nature Conservancy of Kansas in memoriam of Stan Miller, our founding member who passed away and $500 to KCPT to sponsor the showing of Tom James’ film on the North Fork of the White River.

New donation policy

Last year the Board and Officers established a new policy regarding donations; rather than considering each request as it came in and “piecemealing” our donations we will consider them all once a year in September when they can all be “weighed” and compared to each other. September is our “lowest” month financially so we can better decide how much we can give. We left ourselves the option to vote exceptions, if needed; i.e., the donation in memoriam of Stan Miller and the donation in order to sponsor Tom James’ film. The $1,500 to TNC was voted on last year but actually sent this year to give the club time to seek private donations from the members to which you generously responded, sending us over $5,000.

Auction

We had a very good auction last year, netting the club around $6,000. This spring we had a generous donation of a lot of fly fishing supplies and gear from the widow of one of our members who passed away, Bob Groody. This will be sold at the auction.

FInances

There are lots of routine expenditures to be voted on. Monthly we have a financial report and yearly an audit. An audit of our financial transactions and position was accomplished in March of 2005. At the end of June (six months), the club had a combined cash balance of $7,444.23. The club maintains two accounts, the larger a Money Market to which is tied our credit card machine used annually at the auction and an ordinary commercial account for ordinary operations, both of these are at First National.

Conservation

There is always discussion about Conservation issues. Most recently we added our club’s name in official support of the “Citizen’s Agenda for Rivers”. The National FFF highly recommended us doing so.

Education

We are always planning for upcoming events, such as the Olathe Aquafest. The NFFW activities in April took a great deal of planning and discussion. Under current discussion are formal Education classes to be given at the Discovery Center, at the Community of Christ Church to our own members and this week, a request from Shawnee County, KS (Topeka). These are all possibilities; look for things to begin to get developed!

501(c)3

This status was actually granted (upon request) the HOAFF last year by the IRS. This very positive move affects all our discussions since. We can now promise donors full tax deductions. Speaking of that, any functions that you volunteer for such as the Olathe Aquafest are fully tax deductible to you; in otherwords, your mileage, any meals you may have to eat because you are away and lodging expenses you may incur. This new status also opens up to the HOAFF the very real possibility of Charitable giving.

Southern Council Conclave

"Celebrating the Arts of Fly Fishing"

Thursday Programs added to 2005 Conclave Schedule

Planning for the 2005 FFF Southern Council Conclave is in full swing and we need your help. This is the 25th anniversary of the Southern Council and we will be “Celebrating the Arts of Fly-Fishing”.

This year will see an expanded Thursday pre-conclave program. These programs will be value added programs and will require an additional modest fee.

Most will limit the number of participants. Be sure to send you registration in early to insure you a place in the program of your choice. You can get a registration form as well as register online at www.southerncouncilfff.org.

Some of the Thursday programs include on the water seminars like, Advanced Nymph Fishing with Joe Humphreys and John Wilson, Sink Tip Symposium and Stream Strategies with Roger Maler, River Boat Basics by John Berry and Gary Flippin, Soft Hackle Fishing with Davy Wotton and a workshop on Kyaking with Louis & Clark Outfitters.

You can take the FFF Casting Pre-certification with Captain Tom White.

There are fly tying programs with Captain Lenny Moffo and How to Spin Deer Hair with George Harmeling, and other programs of interest including Painting Wildlife with Watercolors by Duane Hada, a Stream Entomology program - Bugs - An In-Depth Study with Art Mazzier.

Extend your conclave trip by a day and take advantage of some of these fine programs.

The Fox Tail Grub

 by Ward Bean from www.warmwaterflytyer.com

Hook                      Mustad 9672                      Size 10

Thread                      Uni-Thread                      6/0 - Olive

Eyes                      Bead Chain                      Small -You choose color

Tail                      Rabbit Fur from Zonker Strip                      Olive

Underbody                      Hare-Tron Dubbin                      Dark Olive

Body                      Hen Neck Feathers                      Olive Grizzly

Step 1

Lay down a thread base back to the bend. Then return the thread to about one eye width behind the hook’s eye. Attach the bead chain eyes with several figure-eight thread wraps and return the thread to the hook’s bend. Apply Super Glue to the eyes to lock them in place.

Step 2

Remove a clump of rabbit hair from a Zonker Strip and measure it against the hook. The tail clump should be as long as the hook. Tie in the tail material and return the thread to the base of the tail.

Step 3

Select and prepare a hen neck feather by removing the fluff from the base of the stem. Stroke the barbs back to expose the feathers tip. The size of the feather barbs should be the length of the hook’s gap. Tie the feather in by the tip “wet fly style” with the cupped side of the feather facing the hook.

Step 4

Build a tapered underbody by dubbing the body to about the half-way point on the shank making sure that the body widens as you dub forward.

Step 5

Palmer the feather forward over the dubbing and bind it down at the dubbing break. Remove any excess feather material in preparation for tying in the second feather.

Step 6

Tie in the second feather in the same way that you tied in the first. This feather should have barbs somewhat longer than the first feather so that the tapered look of the body can be maintained.

Step 7

Next, dub the remainder of the underbody by continuing the taper to the eyes. Palmer the second feather forward to the hook’s eyes and bind it down with a couple wraps of thread. Remove any excess feather.

Step 8

Dub the thread with a very fine noodle of dubbing and figure-eight the dubbed thread around the bead chain eyes until a pronounced head of dubbing encases the eyes. Form a neat thread head in front of the eyes and tie off the thread.

Step 9

Now brush the Fox Tail Grub vigorously with a dubbing brush to marry the dubbing fibers with the feather barbs. The more you brush the buggier the fly gets.

If you don’t have a dubbing brush the Whitlock Dubbing Brush is very simple to make. All you need is a wooden dowel for the handle and a piece of velcro for the brush. Use some super glue to affix the velcro to the dowell and some heavy thread to decorate the handle and you’re in business.

For more information go to the “At The Bench” page at www.warmwaterflytyer.com to learn how to make one.
