President's Message
New Year with a New President
by Mark Borserine
The HOAFF embarks on a new
year, with a new president but with the continuity of most Officers returning.
Mark Borserine is President, Dave Andrews is Past President and Secretary, Jim
Jorgenson and Bill Lyons have volunteered to Co-Chair Outings and Bill Lindley
and Jim Mattes will Co-Chair two new positions, Education and Awards &
Recognition. Every Officer position is now filled! But we will need your help!
Our Club comes off our most
successful Auction ever; we raised $2,000 more than last year. We are
financially better than we have ever been!
2005 will be a great year – fully staffed and fully funded!
The FFF, of whom we are an
affiliate club, is unique in that it is the only national organization that has
Education as one of its goals, the other are Conservation and Restoration. You
will notice that the words in our new logo are Education, Conservation and
Restoration – not by accident! We made
some great strides forward in the last two years in the area of education. Our
library seminars continue to grow, we held a very successful session for NFFW
at the Prairie Center and we were invited to teach to the Heart of America
Council Boy Scout! We are reaching the
point where organizations are asking us to come to them. I want to thank all
those who volunteered last year and encourage a lot more to come out and help.
I realize we are all busy, but if each member would simply commit to help with
just one event outside of the normal monthly meeting, it would be an immense
help!
A lot of people are shy about
coming out to teach others. When I was in the Army, they taught us that the
best way to learn something was to teach it. I’ve always been a basically
competent fly tier; but, this last summer I volunteered to teach at least four
times. Even though I taught just very basic flies, my skills increased by at
least 200 percent just by doing it – because you concentrate on the steps and
techniques! I can assure you that you
will know more than the people you are teaching at these events, so you need
not feel nervous at all.
I will be encouraging a lot
more of our members to join the FFF. The FFF is unique precisely because of its
purpose to educate. The Military Order (I belong to) has a saying: “to transmit
these ideals to posterity”. It is therefore, the FFF’s purpose to create future
generations of fly fishers, who will also become conservationists and
restorationists!
I look forward to 2005 with
enthusiasm. I know we will make it our best year ever!

month
Community of Christ Church
79th
& Mission Rd, Prairie Village, KS
Hatch of the Month
Bring a fly or a couple of flies to add
to the Match of the Month collection. During each meeting names are drawn and
the winner receives the collection of flies. This is a great way to learn new
fly patterns and share some of your favorite flies with the rest of the club.
Members can also donate a dollar to enter for the drawing.
Featured Fly Tyer
Fly Tyer of the Month will be tying
some innovative new fly patterns so plan to come early to the meeting.
If you are interested in being a featured fly tyer, contact Dave
Andrews.
2004 Annual Banquet
by John Richards
Nearly 50
members and guests enjoyed the 3rd Annual Banquet for the Heart of America Fly
Fishers held December 4, 2004 at the Lebanon Country Club at Bennett Spring.
Dave Andrews
recognized the Officers of 2004 and thanked them for their service, then he
introduced new president Mark Borserine
and the 2005 Officers.
Mark presented
Dave with a plaque for his service for the past two years. This was followed by
the Raffle Event in which several nice prizes were awarded to the people with
the correct tickets (please check those numbers correctly).
The awards ceremony
recognized the following members of their achievements this past year.
Golden Strike Indicator Award - Roger O’Mara
Outstanding Service Award - Hod McIntosh
Best Newsletter Article - Paul Bennetts
Longest Trip Awards - Dave Andrews, Dan
Zimmerman and Cliff Cain (all went to Alaska)
Tall-Tale-Tell Award - Don Grundy
Multi-Fly Award - John Bell and Jim Ohnemus
Travis Trout Traveling Trophy - Bill Brant
Craig Fuller of
the Missouri Department of Conservation gave a very interesting and informative
program. He spoke on the new trout regulations for next year and useful
information about the fishery at Bennett Spring and the Niangua River.
Thanks to all
who attended the dinner and participated in the activities of fun and
fellowship. Mark your calendar for
December 3, 2005 for the Heart of America Fly Fishers 4th Annual Banquet.
2004 Auction and Raffle, Some Final
Thoughts
by Dan Zimmerman
Well, folks, we
made it through another auction. The 2003 auction was a major learning
experience. It was my hope for 2004 to better organize and streamline auction
procedures. I enlisted the help of many members and organized tasks into doable
segments. Many HOAFF members stepped up to the plate and made things much
easier, smoother and better. I think it is fair to say that overall, we had
very high quality fly rods, reels, equipment, flies, guided trips, etc.
Auctioneer, J.P. Rozine, his wife Lynn, and their assistant Stan all again did
a fantastic job both getting quality bids and entertaining the crowd.
Club revenue
from the auction far exceeding my best hopes. We took in $7669.01. Even after
expenses, our organization will net well in excess of $7000. This money is more
important than ever. As many of you know, the trend is toward fewer outdoor
sportsmen generally, and fewer fly fishermen specifically. I have been hearing
that revenues from similar auctions have been tending downward so we can be
proud of the generosity of HOAFF members. There is and always will be a need to
fund important conservation projects and to find and teach new fly fishermen,
young and old alike, the thrill of the sport and the responsibility that goes
with it. The funds we raised will help us continue to fund club activities and
expand our efforts in conservation, education and community projects.
I appreciate
the generous contribution of time and talent by our members. I have attempted
to personally thank everyone who helped. If I missed someone, I apologize. I also appreciate the spirited bidding and
the jovial atmosphere created by those attending.
Of course, I
thank our many donors. It all starts with items to raffle and auction. Please
keep these folks in mind whenever you buy something related to flyfishing.
As to 2005, I
have agreed to again act as auction chairman. I hope to keep the quantity and
quality of our contributions high and continue to develop the auction in a way
to ensure its longevity. I will again need the help of many to achieve this
goal.
Why
Should I Join the FFF
by Mark Borserine
The sale of
both fishing and hunting licenses are declining nationwide as our society
becomes increasingly urbanized.
Urbanization causes apathy (more dangerous than outright opposition) to
issues of Conservation and Restoration.
It has always been anglers and hunters who have been at the forefront of
Conservation.
A famous duck
hunter, author and attorney, Nash Buckingham, was a farsighted individual who
saw the declining duck populations and shocked by the efficiency of the first
automatic shotgun, the Browning of 1905 (aka the Auto-5), pushed for and got
into place some of the first laws placing limits on game, setting seasons, and outlawing market hunting. (I encourage
you to read his works). Lee Wulff in Fly Fishing and Ray Scott in Bass Fishing
were among the first to think of Catch and Release, slot and size limits. Laws and regulations protecting and
promulgating species have NOT come from non-anglers/hunters! PETA has never supported one law that
supports habitat conservation or restoration!
Strangely, they have no interest in the long-term welfare or preservation
of a species!
The FFF is
dedicated to preserving our traditions and values by educating future
generations of anglers. Your membership
will help this effort. On your part,
you will gain access to this very education through the FFF magazine “FlyFisher”
and participation at Conclaves (which I highly recommend).

Bennett
Spring Outing
by Roger
O'Mara
The club had our annual outing to Bennett Springs.
Catch and release but too much rain in the springs water table area produced
high murky water. We all caught fish but I spent my ‘vacation’ doing
whatever...sitting in the ‘large room’ at Sand Springs Motel reading. It’s
where I get to prepare a venison roast dinner for my roommates plus guests.
This year was no exception we had fun.
Speaking of fun...We have our Banquet on Saturday
night at the local country club (51 in attendance). There is a guest speaker
(Clint, local conservation officer, knows Bennett well). We also hand out
awards to outstanding club members for achievements during the past year and a
raffle.
There is also the GOLD STRIKE INDICATOR
award. A trophy size “gold” ball with the peg through the middle, presented to
the biggest laugh during the past year. Oh...if you’ve gotten your waders on
inside out and ‘there are witnesses’ you might be the recipient. Well
this year it was me.
Last year I was chef for 8 guys in our room and now
it’s time for coffee. “I’ll take one” says Mark (who is president for 05).
“Sure” says I. Well I brought along a case of ‘Ozarka’ (brand name) water. I
grab one off the counter, fill a cup, put in the microwave for 2 minutes. I
have a system of putting coffee in a coffee filter, pinch close...held tight
with a spring clothes pin, which now becomes the handle for dipping. So...I’m
dipping away and can’t figure out where this sweet smell is coming from.
Mark comments: “Good coffee, what did you put in
it?”. “Nothing”, says I. “Just creamer, one sugar that’s it”. So Mark is
continuing to complement the coffee and getting warmer by the minute. Pretty
soon he’s down to a strapless T shirt and boxer shorts. His checks start to
look like Santa’s on a snowy Christmas eve.
Doug, one of our roommates says: “Hey, has anyone
seen “my” Ozarka Water, water bottle? Put it right here on the counter just to
the left of these others”. “Had it filled with an expensive Rum I wanted you
guys to try”.
At this point Mark is sweating profusely and says,
“I think I know where it went”.
So around it goes... ”get yer
hot coffee at room ‘5 oh’ “.
Long story short... O’Mara’s coffee got the G.S.
Award.

The Nature Conservancy
Bennett Spring/Niangua River Project
by The Nature
Conservancy - Missouri Chapter
In our efforts
to promote conservation and restoration of fisheries important to our region,
our club has donated $1500 to the
Bennett Spring/Niangua River Project.
Now we call on
our members to make individual donations to match these funds. As a further
benefit of individual donations, a distinguished club member has also offered
to match member donations up to the clubs commitment.
The purpose of
this project is to restore, expand and protect one of the last remaining Ozark
savanna landscapes and the high quality river system embedded within it. The
Niangua River is at the core of this critical ecosystem for the western Ozarks
Savanna Landscape Area. The Nature Conservancy and its partners will work to
protect it forever.
In addition to
saving a globally unique landscape, the project will:
• Protect Bennett Spring by conserving
the land that encompasses portions of the spring’s recharge area.
• Preserve the integrity of the Niangua
River and the rich aquatic life it contains.
• Enhance Bennett Spring State Park as a
tourist destination and revenue producer for the Lebanon community.
Your private
donation, and funds received by Heart of America Flyfishers will help fulfill
an urgent need to develop a unified conservation plan for the watershed,
addressing both the unique terrestrial landscape and the aquatic resources of
the Niangua River system.
Protection of
the Bennett Spring/Niangua Project is a premier opportunity to save one of the
last great natural places in Missouri.
Please consider a donation to help The Nature Conservancy realize
our goals in protecting Bennett Spring forever.
